“Redefining Dementia one person at a time”

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month!

What better way to honor this day than through MUSIC?!

Music has the ability to positively impact the brain in many ways. Memory care programs that meaningfully engage persons and include music have been shown to:

  • reduce physical altercations

  • reduce the use of antipsychotic medications

  • decrease the number of falls as shown in the graph below

Everyone can benefit from the power of music. To assure success with your person consider the following:

  • Make sure you’re using musical favorites - from the era when the person was age 10-25

  • Set up music access that will really work - ease of use

  • Plan frequency of use

  • Try to be consistent and check in to be sure all is going well

THE POWER OF MUSIC

MUSIC has the power to:

  • create joyful connections

  • retrieve emotional memories

  • enhance neural pathways

  • engage more parts of the brain than any other activity

  • reconnect with past history and personal identity

  • provide a rich sensory experience

  • decreases negative emotions

  • Improve balance through movement

Watch how music can wake up a resting brain!

Botes Memory Method is a method of staging neurocognitive decline through Occupational Therapy driven activity analysis of functional strengths and weaknesses. The Botes Memory Method was created by Sira Botes, OTR/L in an effort to provide best care pathways for those experiencing cognitive changes. 5 “Memory Bouquet Flower Levels” - the Lily, the Daisy, the Violet, the Rose and the Bouquet - include specific characteristics that may be observed in persons staged at each flower level. The Bouquet roadmap offers the optimum in care, support, solutions, and hope on an otherwise desolate and often frightening terrain. You can learn more about Botes Memory Method on our website.
